Anti-Bullying Accreditation Scheme. What is it?
The devastating and long lasting effects of bullying are well known. Children and young people frequently say that bullying is one of the main reasons they do not attend school. In 2003 (DfES Tackling Bullying), it was reported that 51% of primary pupils thought that bullying was a problem in their school. As a result, the South West Regional Anti-Bullying Accreditation Scheme aims to recognise schools who are actively tackling bullying and therefore developing the emotional health and well being of the school. Two local authorities, Swindon and Gloucestershire have developed this scheme. The scheme is available to us as we have already achieved our Healthy School Status.

Who is involved?
A committee of committed people need to work together to ensure this scheme can work. Therefore, a member of the Senior Leadership Team is involved, along with another teacher from within the school. The school has a named governor with the responsibility for Anti-bullying. It is expected that the school has an Anti-bullying Interest Group – these people will include:
  • Parents
  • Pupils
  • Teaching and non-teaching staff
  • Governor
  • Members of wider community, e.g. Youth Work, Police.
What’s happened so far?
  • Peatmoor’s Anti-bullying policy has been reviewed and up-dated and been shared with teaching staff.
  • An action plan has been written with targets to meet in relation to the scheme.
  • Paul Watermeyer and Sarah Adams have met with Richard Banks, our new school governor.
  • Parents are being informed through Peatmoor’s web-site and newsletters of the Accreditation scheme.
What will happen next?
A significant and imperative part of this scheme, of course, has to involve the children. A questionnaire will be written for the children to give their thoughts and feelings about bullying and how they feel about it. The action plan needs to be included within the coming year’s School Development Plan and the rest of the committee needs to be formed. If you are interested in becoming involved in this work please come and ask in the school office.
