Our Vision for the Link Academy Collaborative Trust

What is an Umbrella Trust?

An umbrella trust is a structure that allows a group of schools to build an effective collaborative model.  Under an umbrella trust, each school maintains its own governance and unique character but they are also able to agree a structure with the other schools that will support closer collaboration and joint school improvement.

An umbrella trust is a single company formed by key people from the schools that are applying.  The umbrella trust has a relationship with each school but it does not have direct management of the schools. Each school would establish its own academy trust, and each individual academy trust will have its own funding agreement with the Secretary of State.

The role of the umbrella trust is very flexible and is agreed between all the schools.

The vision for the Link Umbrella Trust is to provide an improved educational offering and support to all our pupils. It is to strengthen the capacity of all the schools to consistently improve educational standards and ensure that the shared community of all the schools receives the best educational start in life.

There will be a focus for our schools to share expertise, resources and services more effectively to enable our vision to be realised.

Academy Trusts are all charitable companies limited by guarantee and have two layers of governance: the members of the Trust, who operate at a strategic level (they are the owners of the company, rather like shareholders) and the governors (who together make up the governing body) who have the responsibilities delegated to them by the Academy Trust. The constitution of an academy is set out in its Articles of Association which are agreed with the secretary of state.
